Brief Introduction

Born and raised in Beirut, Sonia earned a diploma in interior design. Her interest in art showed up at an early age, and she began painting literally as soon as she could raise a pencil. She was persistent in drawing and painting and her skills developed quickly as a result. What started as a passion and hobby tuned by time to be her profession. Known for her portrait and wild life acrylic paintings, Sonia’s artworks are characterized by her brilliant handling of impressive bold colors. Her paintings have been exhibited at the “Unesco Palace” in Beirut, and her work was featured in many private collections in Lebanon and the Gulf region. She has been teaching art for over 25 years for different levels and ages. As a result, it is an honor to have Sonia here at Hadia’s Lebanese Cuisine and talk about her remarkable art.

Some of my work

I’ve developed my career as an art instructor and working as a preschool teacher. Each of these experiences and practices allowed me to become a better and more patient artist who can connect deeply with those attending my classes and teach them the basics of pen and ink drawing.

As a creator, there is nothing more satisfying than getting a rush of unexpected inspiration and fueling a productive streak. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen every day. The reality is that the first spark of excitement is usually not enough to sustain your work from start to finish. A great way to revive interest in a project is to recognize and embrace the fact that inspiration ebbs and flows. I schedule an amount of time that I can easily balance with the rest of the demands of life, just to work on that half-finished project. I decide on an amount of time that I can commit to, and don’t stress too much about how long it is. Even if it is only an hour once a week, I commit the time to working on it.

When I encounter creative blocks with my work, I often switch between projects or take a timed break before attempting to continue a piece. If I feel very challenged by a piece, I might change something about it or work on it a few minutes at a time to ensure I finish it by my deadlines.

Paint only that which interests you in the way you choose to paint it. Don’t change your approach to gain sales, popularity, or acceptance. You will never do your best work if you do.

I try to infuse my artwork with a very specific feeling or perception.

I think about how I can manipulate temperature, shapes, and lines in order to trigger certain emotions associated with my painting.

Digital art looks a little cold, sterile to me. It can look great, but it can look a little too polished, perfect and I think beauty lies in the traditional imperfect medium of art and creation.

My favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh, I love his passion and his art style and how his paintings put you in his place and time. He also has an incredible life story that is very encouraging to me, to hear of his tragedies and how he powered through them.

My future plan is to start my own gallery project to strike a balance between the creative world and the business world.
