I grew up eating labneh, a staple at breakfast tables in every Lebanese home and one of my all-time favorite foods! This deliciously creamy, delicately tangy Middle Eastern yogurt cheese is surprisingly easy to make at home. All you need is plain yogurt and a little salt. Simply season the yogurt, then strain it for 12 hours for a softer consistency or 24 hours if you prefer thick, creamy homemade labneh.

How to Serve this Lebanese Labneh Recipe: Traditional and Delicious Ways

Lebanese labneh is a wonderfully versatile, strained yogurt cheese that is deeply embedded in Middle Eastern culinary culture. Creamy, tangy, and incredibly smooth, it makes an excellent addition to almost any meal. Whether you want to serve it as a dip, spread it on sandwiches, or enjoy it with authentic Arabic bread (pita bread) or crunchy crackers, there are endless ways to bring this staple to your table.
If you have never made your own homemade labneh, you will be amazed at just how quick and easy it is to prepare! Once you have it ready, here are the most traditional and delicious ways to serve it.

1. The Classic Middle Eastern Bread Scoop with Pita Bread

One of the most popular and authentic ways to enjoy traditional labneh in the Middle East is to scoop it up directly with a torn piece of fresh Arabic bread.
• The Traditional Touch: Spread the labneh onto a shallow plate, create a swirl with the back of a spoon, and drizzle generously with extra-virgin olive oil.
• Flavor Boost: For an extra layer of refreshing, aromatic flavor, sprinkle some dried mint over the top before serving.

2. A Simple Lebanese Labneh Wrap

You can easily transform this creamy ingredient into a satisfying, simple breakfast wrap or a light afternoon snack.
• How to make it: Spread a few tablespoons of labneh evenly over fresh Arabic or pita bread.
• The Toppings: Layer on fresh tomato wedges, savory olives, and vibrant mint leaves.
• The Finish: Drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil, roll it up tightly, and enjoy it immediately.
• Pairing: This wrap pairs beautifully with a hot, comforting cup of tea.

3. The Ultimate Lebanese Breakfast Spread

In Lebanon, breakfast is a sacred ritual, and labneh is always the star of the show. It is traditionally served alongside other beloved baked goods:
• Manakish: Pair your creamy dip with these classic, savory Lebanese flatbreads (often topped with za’atar or cheese).
• Zalabia: Serve it with traditional Lebanese fried dough fritters for a wonderful contrast of textures.
• The Vibe: Accompanied by a fresh cup of hot tea, these combinations make for a delightful Lebanese-style breakfast, whether you prefer your morning meal savory or slightly sweet.

4. Crunchy Pita Crouton Appetizer

If you are looking for a party appetizer or a quick, light breakfast option, turn your yogurt cheese into a textured dip. Serve the chilled labneh alongside a bowl of crispy, golden pita croutons. The crunch of the toasted bread pairs perfectly with the velvety texture of the cheese.

5. Part of a Traditional Lebanese Mezze Spread

Labneh is an essential component of a classic Lebanese mezze—a social assortment of small small plates and appetizers served before a main meal. To assemble an authentic platter, place your labneh bowl alongside:
• Freshly sliced vegetables (like cucumbers and radishes)
• A variety of cured olives
• Other favorite Middle Eastern bites, dips, and flatbreads

6. A Refreshing Low-Carb Snack Option

If you are looking for a healthy, low-carb, or keto-friendly snack, skip the bread entirely. Labneh makes a perfect high-protein dip for crisp vegetables. Simply serve it with fresh, chilled cucumber slices for an incredibly refreshing, guilt-free treat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does homemade labneh last in the fridge?

Stored in an airtight container, fresh labneh stays delicious for up to 1 to 2 weeks. To extend its shelf life, submerge the labneh under a thin layer of extra-virgin olive oil, which acts as a natural seal against air.

Can you freeze labneh?

Freezing is not recommended. Because of its high moisture content, freezing alters the cellular structure of the yogurt cheese. When thawed, it will lose its signature velvety, creamy texture and become grainy and separated.

What is a good substitute if I cannot find or make labneh?

While nothing perfectly replicates the distinct flavor and deep, fermented tang of traditional labneh, the closest textural substitute is full-fat Greek yogurt that has been strained through cheesecloth for a few hours to thicken. Cream cheese mixed with a touch of plain sour cream can also work in a pinch for spreads, though it will lack labneh’s signature sour profile.

Is labneh gluten-free and low-carb?

Yes, pure labneh is naturally gluten-free and very low in carbohydrates. It is an excellent high-protein option for keto, low-carb, or grain-free diets, provided you serve it with vegetable crudités instead of pita bread.

Description

Homemade Lebanese labneh is a breakfast staple in every Lebanese home and one of my all-time favorite foods! This creamy, tangy strained yogurt cheese is incredibly easy to make with just yogurt and salt. Strain for 12 hours for a softer texture or 24 hours for thicker labneh. Enjoy it as a dip, sandwich spread, or with Arabic bread (pita bread) and crackers!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole-milk yogurt
  • 1 level teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix the yogurt with the salt until well combined.
  • Place a large strainer over a deep bowl and line it with cheesecloth, muslin, or a clean kitchen towel.
  • Pour the salted yogurt into the lined strainer.
  • Gather the edges of the cloth, folding them over the yogurt to cover it completely. The excess liquid, known as whey, will begin to drain into the bowl underneath.
  • Transfer the bowl and strainer to the refrigerator and let the yogurt drain for 15–24 hours, depending on how thick you like your labneh. The longer it drains, the thicker the labneh will become.
  • Once the yogurt has thickened to your desired consistency, transfer the homemade labneh to a clean container and store it in the refrigerator.
  • To serve, spread the labneh onto a serving plate, drizzle generously with olive oil, and enjoy with pita bread or serve it as shown in the pictures above. Happy eating!

Notes

Texture & Straining Time: The recipe above reflect the minimum straining time of 12 hours, which yields a beautifully soft, spreadable consistency. If you prefer a thick, intensely creamy homemade labneh, simply prolong the straining time in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
