Fried Baby Sardine with Sesame Crust
Appetizers are by far my favorite type of food, and these bite-sized sesame crusted sardines are delicious and easy to make.
The first time I had these crispy goodness was in Barcelona. The sesame seeds are the bonus here! They make a crispy tasty coating, and once you try these sardines, you can’t stop popping one piece after another. So I decided to recreate it at home, and I am glad I did, my family really enjoyed.
Sardines contain a variety of nutrients. They are a great source of calcium, vitamin B-12, omega-3 fatty acids, potassium and phosphorous.
Hope you give this dish a try and enjoy it as much as we do.

Ingredients
- 200 g. /7 oz. baby sardines
- ¾ cup flour
- 3 eggs lightly beaten
- 1 ½ cups white sesame seeds
- A pinch of salt
- 5 cups canola oil for deep frying
Instructions
- Rinse the sardines, cut off the heads and remove the innards. Rinse one more time and pat dry with paper towels. No need to scale (baby sardines have less or no scale).
- Split the bodies of the sardines lengthwise to remove center bones. Cut each sardine into two fillets, and season with a pinch of salt.
- Place three dishes on a counter. Fill the first with flour, the second with the beaten eggs and the third with sesame seeds.
- Dust one sardine at a time with flour, then in the eggs and finally with the white sesame seeds, making sure they are well coated.
- Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour before frying.
- Heat the oil to an adequate frying temperature, fry in batches to a golden color. Enjoy!
