Literally, there is a family of mujadara in Lebanon. Mujadara safra, mujadara hamra, mujadara makhbousa, mujadara with rice, mujadara with bulgur, etc\u2026. I would literally smell my childhood in these dishes \u2013 at least once a week one type of mujadara had been on our family lunch table. Both feature bulgur and lentils, and in both onions are typically caramelized; so you may be probably asking yourself what is the difference between both? The garnish here is far more than just decorating a plate, but will add an incredible depth of flavor to the humble lentil-bulgur pilaf! The secret behind the crispiness is to use red onions and to slice them super thin; great tips that has been given to me by my cherished mom \u2013 she had been and still a very skilled cook and I didn\u2019t know how valuable those hints were until I got out into the real world of cooking!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hadiaslebanesecuisine.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/muja-onion.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"847\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>How\u00a0 to caramelize onions?<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>In a wide skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and cook about 10 minutes, stirring all the time\u00a0 until onions start wilting.\u00a0\u00a0Reduce heat to low and continue to cook and scrape until the onions are rich brown in color. You need to remove them before they get burnt brown. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to take the onions out of oil. (You will later top the dish with those onions you caramelized).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5198 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/hadiaslebanesecuisine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/mmmp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hadiaslebanesecuisine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/mmmp.jpg 700w, https:\/\/hadiaslebanesecuisine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/mmmp-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I adore\u00a0 the very simple dressing of lemon juice, olive oil, pomgrenate molasses and sumac coming from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hadiaslebanesecuisine.com\/newsite\/recipe-items\/middle-eastern-salad\/\">Middle Eastern salad<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hadiaslebanesecuisine.com\/newsite\/recipe-items\/fattoush\/\">Fatoush<\/a>\u00a0, these salads go enticingly so well with all types of pilafs, mujadaras, including mujadara with bulgur. Add the sliced onions and cook about 10 minutes, stirring all the time. At this stage onions start wilting. Reduce heat to low and continue to cook and scrape until the onions are rich brown and crispy. You need to remove them before they get burnt brown. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to take the onions out of oil. Reduce heat to low, cover up and simmer for 25 minutes, allowing the bulgur to cook and the flavors develop together.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-5201-step-0-5\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with the caramelized onions.
